How did we cure ourselves of many aches pains and illnesses in the past?

Most of the remedies worked very well, were cheap and could usually be found in most homes.

Did you know that? Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately, without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional “pain relievers.”

Did you know that? Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They’ll clear up your stuffed nose.

Aching muscles from a dose of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly, even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes. Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection. To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Coca-Cola cure for rust. Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer. If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can’t find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

Smart splinter remover, just pour a drop of Elmer’s Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt’s tomato paste boil cure, cover the boil with Hunt’s tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters. To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine a powerful antiseptic.

Heinz vinegar to heal bruises. Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Kills fleas instantly. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog’s bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye to fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odour, Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Eliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat’s ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat’s skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief, It’s not just for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain. Don’t have it too hot, because you don’t want to burn yourself, Make sure you test it for heat.

Most of the products mentioned are widely available in the United States and Canada, but perhaps not so well known in other countries.

It is not essential that you use the actual brand name, as other similar brands are available and would work just as well.
The brand names are very well known, but if you have any doubt about treatment, Please see a Physician first.

Cardio E-Z

Cardio E-Z is an oral chelation product developed for the cardiovascular system function. In 1997 Dr. Donsbach developed Cardio E-Z after comprehensive testing at Santa Monica Hospital on hundreds of patients. It contains EDTA, CoQ-10, and a combination of nutrients that make it, according to Dr. Donsbach, the best product for cardiovascular system function. Some of the important nutrients and their benefits to the human body present in Cardio E-Z are discussed below.

Vitamin C

Cardio E-Z contains 400 mg of Vitamin C per serving. Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble substance that is responsible for several important functions in the body. It is an important antioxidant that blocks some of the damage caused by free radicals that are a byproduct of converting food to energy. It is also important in the healing of wounds and production of skin, tendons, blood vessels, etc.

The build up of hazardous byproducts in the body causes aging and produces various health problems such as heart disease and cancer. Cardio E-Z contains the necessary amounts of Vitamin C that help to reduce the chances of heart disease.

Vitamin E

Cardio E-Z contains 300 IU of vitamin E per serving. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble substance that is commonly found in eight forms. Each form performs different activities that are vital to the body. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects your body from free radicals. Free radicals are the main culprits of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin E in Cardio E-Z reduces the chance of cardiovascular disease and plays a role in immune function.

Niacin

Cardio E-Z contains 50 mg niacin per serving. Niacin is also known as Vitamin B3. Small amounts are also manufactured in the body. It helps in the release of energy and metabolism, cell respiration, functioning of the nervous system and normal secretion of stomach fluids. A deficiency of niacin causes dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia. Required amounts of niacin for healthy bodily functions are present in Cardio E-Z.

Vitamin B6

Cardio E-Z contains 50 mg of Vitamin B6 per serving. B6 serves an important function in the metabolism of protein. Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble substance that is commonly found in three forms. Cardio E-Z contains the necessary amounts of vitamin B6 for proper functioning of nervous and immune systems.

Calcium

Cardio E-Z contains 100 mg of calcium per serving. Calcium plays an important part in the human body by keeping the bones strong and supporting the proper function of muscles and nerves. Cardio E-Z helps to maintain proper functioning of the human body by providing additional amounts of calcium.

Magnesium

Cardio E-Z contains 200 mg of magnesium per serving. Magnesium is required for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Cardio E-Z uses this element to keep heart rhythm steady along with other vital functions.

CoQ10

Cardio E-Z contains 15 mg of CoQ10 per serving. CoQ10 is also known as ubiquinone or Coenzyme Q10. It is found naturally in the body in small amounts. It is an anti-oxidant that is used for release in cells. Coenzyme Q10 helps with congestive heart failure when taken orally. This is one of the more important nutrients in Cardio E-Z.

Ginkgo

Cardio E-Z contains 15mg of Ginkgo per serving. It is basically used for its powerful effect on the circulatory system. It increases oxygen levels in the brain and blood circulation. Cardio E-Z uses Ginkgo to prevent clumping in arteries.

Networking is a productive activity. But to benefit the productivity to its full extent you should network the way you would organize other activities.

There is a difference between networking and selling. Networking might be familiar to selling, but it is different in the fact that sales is dedicated to a specific service (that you offer in this case). When you network you do not sell something, but you rather match.
Networking is about exchanging information and knowledge. You could exchange information about (other) people, about you, or even about information and knowledge about specific topics.

The goal of networking is to find a match. And this always includes two sides: You and the group, or you and the other.

Think for this last example about dating someone, and you communicate about mutual interests. The better the match, the more of a chance that both agree in a next step.

So if networking is about matching, you should focus on moving in networks where your input is feasible to match.

If you enter a business network that is focused on information and contribution of specific knowledge and you are in for just knowing people and socializing, the match chances are poor.

If you enter a group or business network that is focused on referrals and your input is knowledge the chances are also minor.

Networking is possible at any time, but most networking events are not really productive. They are if you are focused.

You know how some food labels indicate that the contents of a
package are ‘fat-free’? So you stock up on lots of such ‘good’
foods, faithfully avoiding as much fat as you can.

But somehow, you continue to pile on the weight. How can that
be? I’m assuming you’re exercising regularly here. If you aren’t
then that’s a different story altogether.

Well, not all ‘fat-free’ foods are truly fat-free.
The trouble here is that in order to make these ‘fat-free’
products more palatable for you, the manufacturers add lots of
sugar or sweeteners of questionable safety to them.

Next time you go shopping, check this out for yourself: pick up
any ‘fat-free’ (non-dairy) food product off the shelf and see
if it contains any of the following items: ‘glucose’, ’syrup’,
‘dextrose’, and other ingredients that end in ‘-ose’.

These are all sugars. Those that don’t contain sugars may contain
sweeteners like aspartame which have dodgy properties (won’t go
into that now).

What’s so bad about sugars, you ask? Well nothing, if you take
them in moderation. But if you regularly consume ‘fat-free’
products which contain sugars, you’re setting yourself up for
disaster.

This is because of how your body deals with sugars. It metabolizes
some of the sugars you eat, but then stores any excess in form of
fat!

And you thought you were eating fat-free foods!

Worse still, the fat-that-used-to-be-sugar is harder to reach
(read - burn up) when you’re trying to lose weight through exercise
than the fat-that-has-always-been-fat.

Also, if you are so bent on avoiding fat, remember that you
actually need fat to function properly. Your hormones and many
other important chemicals in your body are made from a form of
fat. You may be depriving your body of vital substances without
knowing.

Now bear in mind that there are different types of fat, some good,
some not so good (again, beyond the scope of this article. Very quickly though: the worst types of fats you could ingest are ‘trans-fats’ - on your food labels these are called ‘hydrogenated’ or ‘partially hydrogenated’ vegetable oils. Saturated fats are not ideal, but these ‘trans-fats’ are positively dangerous. Unsaturated fats are the healthiest especially omega 3 oils).

So in all things it pays to wise up and be aware of what
you’re eating.

What does this all mean to you?

Unless you have a medical reason not to, eat your regular
foods, but do so in moderation. For any healthy food plan to
work, it helps if you actually enjoy the food you’re eating.

Always check out the labels of the foods you buy. Make sure that
they don’t contain any ‘hidden fats’ while claiming to be ‘fat-free’.

Remember to eat only when you’re hungry, and to stop eating
when you feel full (not stuffed).

And get moving: start an exercise program and work out regularly.
Aim to turn your body into a fat-burning machine. The benefits
are multiple, and it helps you maintain a healthy weight (and shape;))
while eating your favourite foods.

Diabetics and people who are trying to lose weight or control cholesterol should avoid all forms of ground-up grains, and that includes bread. For everyone else, bread is a perfectly satisfactory food.

Breads have been made for thousands of years, in virtually every culture, to wrap, sandwich, or accompany other foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When ground-up grains were used shortly after milling, there was no need to remove anything or to add ingredients to keep them fresh. Only in our recent history have we turned bread into junk food by removing the germ and fiber from the grains. Even worse, some bread manufacturers add partially hydrogenated fats to their breads to prolong their shelf life.

The best way to assure that you are getting a bread that is made from whole grains, with nothing removed, is to bake your own bread made from flour you grind yourself, or buy from local bakers who grind their flour fresh every few days (these are hard to find.) Not many people are going to be able to do that. So here are my rules for picking the best of the commercial breads:

1. Avoid any bread that is made with partially hydrogenated oils. Read the list of ingredients and if it contains the words partially hydrogenated, put it back on the shelf. Partially hydrogenated oils are totally unnecessary for making good-tasting bread, and we should boycott the companies that use them in their products until they get rid of them. I’m happy to report that Arnold and BrownBerry breads have removed these oils from their recipes, and apologize for not noticing this change when it happened.

2. Get as much whole grain flour as possible. This isn’t easy to tell, because regulations allow bread makers to use the words whole wheat even if portions of the grain have been removed. Words like stone ground, multi-grain, seven-grain or cracked wheat sound healthy but don’t tell you anything. Generally, breads that list whole wheat as the first ingredient are better than those that start with enriched flour of some sort.

3. Pick breads with higher fiber content. 2 grams of fiber per slice is better than 1 or 0 grams. One caution: breads promoted for their fiber content may have added pea fiber or some such ingredient; that’s adding sawdust, not an indication that you’re getting the whole grains. Check the list of ingredients on these breads.

4. Sprouted grain breads may cause a lower rise in blood sugar than breads made with flour, but no good data is available. The bread dough is made from whole grains that are sprouted by soaking them in water, then mashed, instead of using ground dry grains (flour) plus water. They usually have all the nutrients of the whole grains since nothing is removed in the sprouting process. There vitamin content of the grains is increased slightly in the sprouting process. However, these breads still cause a higher rise in blood sugar than cooked whole grains that have not been mashed into a dough.

5. Added seeds are a bonus. Many breads include seeds in the dough or as toppings. This is an easy way to add caraway seeds, sesame seeds, poppy seeds or other whole seeds to your diet.

6. Watch out for breads that taste too good. Nothing is more seductive than a loaf of freshly baked bread. A reasonable portion is 1-2 slices. If you eat the whole loaf in one sitting, or the whole basket of rolls in a restaurant before dinner comes, you’ll get into trouble.

Obviously, it is beneficial for anyone, in a vegetative state lor not to have a Living Will. But, people need to know that many of the Living Wills utilized today have major problems associated with them.

Living Wills Have To Be Clear

Much of the problem stems from misinterpretation of typical Living Wills by medical staff. These forms are often one size fits all and often legally driven and therefore do not flow medically. Also, they are often recommended to patients with end stage conditions who have already agreed to only comfort care or hospice interventions. As such, when medical staff see Living Wills they automatically associate it with a reduced level of care. This is what makes a standard Living Will dangerous and it may comprimise your care and safety.

Most people who create Living Wills are unaware of this problem and wish to receive care, unless they are terminal despite reasonable medical interventions, or in a persistent vegetative state.

Living Wills Call For Group Discussion

In most cases at least, Living Wills should be read and interpreted by at least two persons. They can recheck the document and the patient’s history and decide whether to intervene.

Attorneys often help create the problem when writing Living Wills for clients. They should not be doing Living Wills unless there is some sort of interaction with the help of an experienced physician.

While some of us think that sleep is a total waste of time and is only necessary so we do not collapse, this is a mistake. Some of the latest researches inform us that sleeping less than six hours a day can cause diabetes. The researchers seem to think that lack of sleep affects a certain hormone that is responsible for depressing the appetite. What happens as a result of a diminished sleep is that the organism produces less of this hormone, hence - there is no stopping of our desire for food.

Bad sleeping habits would thus make you eat more, gain overweight and would increase the sugar level in your blood. Once you begin eating in weird hours, your nutrition is in danger. No diet would be able to restrain you. Professionals suggest that one should sleep between six to eight hours a day. Good healthy sleep would not only make you feel better, but will in fact do you better. It is important to try and go to sleep at the same time, so your body would learn to function in a certain regime.

Also, prevent yourself from having large meals before rest time and know the health effects of caffeine. Caffeine puts me to sleep actually better than anything, yet I try to consume it as less as possible. You all know the heavy feeling in the stomach when eating just before bedtime. Our body often times knows what’s good and what’s bad for us, all we have to do is listen to it.

What one can do before going to bed is a little exercise: I do not mean jogging for an hour, although it would of course be profitable, I mean spending about 20 minutes on stretching out and the like. Try and make a habit of it and also of getting a good night rest; our body is also a kind of a machine - treat it well and it will serve you good. Have a goodnight everybody!

WARNING: Today’s column features plenty of fowl language.

Let’s talk chicken. Fast food chicken. We’ll chew on the nutritional info surrounding the sandwiches, subs, salads… even the new “chicken fries” recently trotted out by Burger King.

Every savvy dieter knows white meat chicken is a yummy part of a healthy eating plan. So why are the nutritional numbers so scary at your favorite fast food joint? Flock this way and check out the latest offerings including McDonald’s new line of premium chicken sandwiches.

By now, you must have seen the ads featuring the so-called premium sandwiches. When McDonald’s launches a new product, they saturate the market with mouthwatering ads. But please don’t confuse the catchword premium as a synonym for healthy.

Let’s check the tale of the tape for the nutritional numbers that are accessible a few pecks away at www.mcdonalds.com. As you seem, you have a choice of 3 new sandwiches, with each coming in two forms — grilled or “crispy” which is a nicer word than fried. The envelope please…

Premium Crispy Chicken Classic Sandwich: This 8.2-ounce sandwich has 490 calories (150 from fat), 16 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat (1.5g trans fat), 60 milligrams cholesterol, 1,350mg sodium, 62 grams of carbs, and 3 grams of fiber.

The 8-ounce Premium Grilled Chicken Classic Sandwich is a better bet with 410 calories (80 from fat), 9g fat, 2g saturated fat (zero trans fat), 80 mg cholesterol, 1,210mg sodium, 52g carb, and 3g fiber.

The Premium Crispy Chicken Ranch BLT Sandwich weighs in at 8.6 ounces and weighs ya down with 570 calories (180 from fat), 20g fat, 5g saturated fat (1.5g trans fat), 70mg cholesterol, 1,730mg sodium, 64g carbs, and 3g fiber.

A Premium Grilled Chicken Ranch BLT Sandwich (8.5 ounces) has 480 calories (120 from fat), 13g fat, 3.5g saturated fat (zero trans fat), 90mg cholesterol, 1,590mg sodium, 53g carbs, and 3g fiber.

The 9.6-ounce Premium Crispy Chicken Club Sandwich packs 660 calories, 29g fat, 9g saturated fat (1.5g trans fat), 100mg cholesterol, 1,800mg sodium, 63g carbs and 3g fiber.

And, finally, the 9.4-ounce Premium Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich has 580 calories, 21g fat, 8g saturated fat (zero trans fat), 40mg cholesterol, 1,660mg sodium, 53g carbs, and 3g fiber.

eDiets.com chief nutritionist Susan Burke offers this mini-review:

“McDonald’s new Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich is an OK option for fast food, as long as you do a little modifying so you can have it ‘your way.’ Just say, ‘Hold the mayo!’ Mayo adds saturated fat and calories. Say YES to ketchup or mustard… or both.

“By the way, I’m talking the grilled chicken, not the ‘crispy’ sandwich — crispy is code for added fat — or the chicken BLT, which has 20 grams of fat, 5 grams of saturated fat, and 1.5 grams of trans fat per sandwich.

“If you’re watching your sodium, all bets are off… at McDonald’s and all fast food restaurants. A quick look at all the chicken sandwiches gives me heart palpitations. There are 1,800 milligrams of sodium in just one Premium Crispy Club Chicken Sandwich. That’s 75% of what you need for the entire day.

“Even the plain Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich has 1,200mg sodium, which is still too high for just one sandwich. So, balance the day with fresh fruit and vegetables — and don’t make fast food a daily habit.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself Susan!

While chatting with Susan about fast food in general, I learned that one managerial rooster at a huge chain said size is what really matters when it comes to pleasing the hungry public. Yep, this biz wiz claims we want BIGGER… as in bigger buns, bigger meat, bigger toppings, bigger scale numbers, bigger pants sizes, and bigger medical bills. Oops, he didn’t say all that. But he may as well have.

In honor of this “bigger is better” belief, I think the fast food chains ought to offer special “Really Big Kid” meals featuring heart defibrillators and other nifty toys. I can hear the drive-thru window worker now, as she asks sweetly after taking your order, “Would you like oxygen with that?”

But I digress. I came here today to cackle about chicken. I have to admit I was inspired by the recent spate of Subway commercials featuring none other than that amazing shrinking man Jared. The thin-again spokesperson who says he lost some 245 pounds eating subs (please do not try this with meatball or cheesesteak subs) has lately been skewering fast food chicken choices.

But before you grab a few bawk, bawk, bawks and rush off to Subway for a super healthy chicken sandwich, check this out:

The 6″ Chicken & Bacon Ranch sandwich has 530 calories and 25 grams of fat. The numbers aren’t that much better than the McDonald’s sandwiches listed above. In fact, the McChicken boasts just 370 calories and 16 grams of fat. So what gives?

Well, Jared was sort of comparing apples to oranges when he attacked the fast food sandwich with mucho grams of fat and recommended the 6″ Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwich and its 5 grams of fat.

Savvy dieters like you and me know we need to do our homework before we head to the corner fast food joint for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Stick with grilled and steer clear of breaded chicken and you are off to a good start. Other tips:

  • Say nay-o to mayo. Mustard is a perfectly good chicken sandwich topping.

  • Be sure to load up your sandwich with lettuce and tomato… and any other raw veggie you can sink your teeth into.

  • Just say NO to fries. Round out your meal (not your belly) with water, diet soda, and fruit or a side salad with light dressing served on the side.

Most large franchises now offer nutritional values online or on the premises. Ask for the info if it’s not readily accessible. If they don’t want to dish it out, say bye-bye. It’s your money and your health at stake here. Get what you want, not what they want to serve you.

Now, back to chewing the fat — and calories — on fast food chicken.

Consumer Reports recently investigated more than 35 chicken dishes in 16 restaurants. Some of the more unappetizing results:

  • Boston Market’s Marinated Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad: 800 cals, 62g of fat
  • Wendy’s Mandarin Chicken Salad: 630 cals, 35g of fat
  • Carl’s Jr.’s Low-Carb Breakfast Bowl: 900 cals, 73g of fat

Mr. Bad Food would be remiss if he didn’t check out the nutrition numbers for the latest entry into the fast food chicken wars — Burger King’s Chicken Fries. A 6-piece order with Buffalo dipping sauce has 340 calories (210 from fat), 24 grams of fat (4.5 saturated; 3 trans fat), 40mg cholesterol, 1,020mg sodium, 20g carbs and 2g fiber.

The verdict? The 6-pack is actually slightly worse in some respects than a medium fries which has 360 calories (160 from fat), 18g fat (5 saturated; 4.5 trans fat), 0 cholesterol, 640mg sodium, 46g carbs, and 4g fiber. So don’t fall for “chicken has to be better than french-fried potatoes” trap.

Another heavily hyped chicken sandwich these days is the KFC Snacker. The 99 cents price tag makes it a lot more affordable than the Colonel’s high-priced bucket selections. But you are basically getting little more than one crispy strip nestled inside a “snacker bun” with pepper mayo and a lettuce blend.

The nutrition numbers are 320 calories, 16 grams of fat (3g saturated), 25mg cholesterol, 700mg sodium, 31 grams of carbs and 1 gram of fiber. I don’t know about you, but I’d need at least two of these 4-ounce teasers to feel anywhere near full.

A few decent chicken choices include:

–Burger King Fire-Grilled Chicken Garden Salad with fat free honey mustard dressing has 280 calories and 7 grams of fat.
–Wendy’s Ultimate Grill Chicken Sandwich has 360 calories and 7 grams of fat.
–Quizno’s Small Honey Bourbon Chicken sandwich has 359 calories and 6 grams of fat.
–Hardee’s Charbroiled Bar-B-Q Chicken Sandwich has 415 calories and 5 grams of fat… and includes the mayo.

The bottom line: when you feel peckish for fast food chicken, choose wisely and enjoy your meal. Oh, and don’t squawk to Mr. Bad Food if temptation and bad decision-making cause you to lay an egg, motivationally speaking.

Specifically the jury found that although the plaintiffs did not prove that Knolls intentionally discriminated against them they did prove that Knolls method of deciding who to lay off disproportionately harmed older workers. Thirty of the 68 salaried employees the company laid off were at least 56 years old. In that case Meacham versus Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory the Supreme Court interpreted a provision of the ADEA that permits an employer to take an adverse employment action against an employee. The Supreme Court ruled that if an employer seeks to rely on that defense. The company had its supervisors rate their subordinates based on their performance flexibility and critical skills. At the trial a jury found Knolls had violated the ADEA because its layoff procedure had a disparate impact based on age. In reaching its conclusion that the employer has the burden to prove the reasonable factors other than age defense the Supreme Court looked at another provision of the ADEA the bona fide occupational qualification defense. The BFOQ defense states that it is not unlawful for an employer to take adverse employment actions otherwise prohibited by the ADEA where age is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. Twenty-eight of those 11 employees sued under the ADEA claiming Knolls illegally fired them because of their age. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit initially affirmed the jurys findings but after the United States Supreme Court asked it to reconsider the Second Circuit reversed itself and ruled in favor of Knolls. Even if the employment action is otherwise prohibited by the ADEA. For example it would not be illegal to consider criteria for a particular role in a movie that has a disparate impact on age if the part calls for someone of a particular age. The Supreme Court has previously recognized that the employer has the burden to establish the BFOQ affirmative defense. The Supreme Court then agreed to hear the case and eventually reversed the Second Circuit and reinstated the jurys finding that Knolls policy unlawfully discriminated because of age. It then used those totals to decide who to lay off. A lawyer from Vianen won from a attorney in Lynwood California In Meacham Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory was planning to lay off a number of employees. It has the burden to prove that its decision was based on a reasonable factor other than age. As long as the adverse action is based on reasonable factors other than age. In other words the ADEA permits employers to discriminate based on age considering age is legitimately necessary under the circumstances. Knolls totaled those scores and gave the employees additional points based on their years of service.
