The quality of food we eat (or lack thereof) has a profound affect on Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD. For many people, nutrition alone can effectively work as an ADHD alternative treatment.

A growing body of research points to nutritional deficiencies - especially with essential fatty acids and amino acids - as a contributing factor of Attention Deficit Disorder and learning deficiencies.

Put down the Ritalin bottle for one minute to consider these Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD nutrition research findings;

  • A George Washington University School of Medicine study found that hyperactive children who ate a meal high in protein did equally well, and sometimes better, in school than non-hyperactive kids.

  • An Oxford University (England) study evaluated the effects of fatty acid supplementation in average intelligence children with significant reading and writing disabilities. The ADHD symptoms in children receiving Essential Fatty Acids significantly improved over the children in the control group receiving a placebo.

  • Researchers first tied Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD with lower essential fatty acid in 1981. Studies examining essential fatty acid blood levels in children with behavioral problems in 1983 confirmed this Attention Deficit Disorder nutrition connection.

  • Researchers further documented the essential fatty acid deficiency tie to Attention Deficit Disorder in a 1987 study. Then, a 1995 study comparing essential fatty acid levels in ADHD boys against a control group of boys without ADHD found significantly lower levels of Omega-3 fatty acids.

  • In 1996 Purdue University researchers have found that boys with low blood levels of Omega-3 fatty acids have a greater frequency of Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD.

Attention Deficit Disorder is the most common behavioral disorder in children. Not all Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD children are nutritionally deficient in essential fatty acids, statistics and studies show that a significant number of ADHD children are.

Physicians predominately use stimulant drugs such as Ritalin for Attention Deficit Disorder but studies show that Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD children whose treatment program includes only stimulant medication remain at a high risk for vandalism, petty crime, frequency of alcoholic intoxication, and possession of marijuana. Additionally, ADHD medications do not always work, have a host of harmful side effects and never treat the cause the Attention Deficit Disorder.

With Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD, nutrition and food is one the first aspect of treatment to consider, as an ADHD alternative treatment or used in conjunction with traditional ADHD stimulant drug treatment.

Fatty acids are used to make brain and nerve tissue in the body and are crucial for proper growth, mental function, the immune system and brain development. The body cannot produce the two fatty acids families, Omega-3 and Omega-6, on its own and therefore must receive these key Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD nutrition ingredients through diet and supplementation.

Although the typical Western diet is high in the Omega-6 family of fatty acids (found in corn, sunflower, canola and safflower oil, margarine, vegetable oil and shortening), most Americans young and old are highly deficient in Omega-3.

Learning specialists now believe many childhood behavior and learning problems are associated with Omega-3 deficiencies. This deficiency has a greater impact on males because their requirements for essential fatty acids are, in general, much higher. It is no surprise that boys are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder at a much higher rate than girls.

ADHD adults and parents of ADHD children should include food high in Omega-3 fatty acids daily. That said, many children simply will not eat the Omega-3 rich salmon, mackerel and sardines.

Enter flax seed and flax oil - “food of the gods” when it comes to Omega-3 fatty acids.

Flax seed and flax oil are the richest plant source of Omega-3 fatty acids and offers Attention Deficit Disorder nutrition vital to support healthy childhood behavioral and IQ development. One to two tablespoons of flax oil should be part of a every Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD nutrition food action plan.

In addition to the positive affects on brain functioning, flax oil also works to prevent heart disease and certain types of cancer. Flax oil helps soften skin, balance energy, burn fat, stimulate the metabolism, strengthen the immune system, manage diabetes, help prevent autoimmune disease and inflammatory disorders. Flax oil also helps alleviate PMS and some menopause symptoms.

Here are some great ways to sneak flax oil into the daily diet;

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of flax oil in flavored yogurt.

  • 1 tablespoon of flax oil in fruit smoothies is virtually undetectable.

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of flax oil with one tablespoon maple syrup or honey as a sweetener instead of granulated sugar.

  • Use 1-2 tablespoons of flax oil when making tuna salad or egg salad while proportionably decreasing the amount of Miracle Whip or mayonnaise used.

  • Flax Butter: Melt one stick organic butter and mix with 4 ounces flax oil when cooled to room temperature. Refrigerate until the flax butter solidifies and use in place of margarine.

  • Omega-3 “Ice Cream”: Mix 2 cups yogurt with 1 tablespoon flax oil and fresh or frozen fruit. Serve when frozen.

Most studies conducted on the affects of essential fatty acids found that at least 10 weeks of supplementation is needed to adequately raised fatty acid levels in brain cells. Follow a diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids for at least 10 weeks, and preferably 12 weeks, before judging the effectiveness of nutrition on Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD symptoms.

Important points about flax oil:

  • Flax oil is highly perishable and should be kept refrigerated at all time.

  • Heat destroys the health-giving flax oil properties. Use flax oil only with cold foods, cold proteins are best.

  • When buying flax oil, use only high quality, cold-pressed flax oil. The date pressed and a freshness date of four months or less from the pressed date should be on the label. If not, don’t buy it!

  • Do not use flax seed oil beyond its expiration date since the oil will turn rancid.

Essential fatty acids are not the only element needed when addressing Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD nutrition. Amino acids, from which protein is made, are an integral element since amino acids and essential fatty acids are both needed to work in the body. Therefore, adding quality protein is a key in Attention Deficit Disorder nutrition.

Attention Deficit and hyperactive people can greatly reduce the level of unfocused or misdirected energy simply by starting the day with a protein based breakfast. A solid protein breakfast can increase concentration, reduce restlessness and increase mental and physical calm.

Instead of starting the day with sugared cereals, pancakes covered in syrup, sweet rolls, doughnuts or danishes, try these brain-boosting breakfast ideas;

  • Scrambled eggs, toast and fruit.

  • Whole wheat toast with peanut butter.

  • Fruit and yogurt smoothie with flax oil.

  • Protein shake.

  • Bacon and eggs with toast and milk.

  • Egg and sausage patty on English muffin.

  • Yogurt mixed with a tablespoon of flax oil.

Healthy eating starts with careful planning and organization. Since fresh produce has a very limited shelf life, regular grocery shopping is a must. Creating a menu for the week and writing out a shopping list will save you time and money; while helping you stick to healthy recipes. Local health food stores and farmer markets are very money-wise solutions. Plus, frequent visits will allow you expand your culinary horizons as well as mingle with other health-concerned people.

Healthy eating means using fresh ingredients and gentle cooking methods without adding any artificial ingredients and fats. Healthy eating requires a lot of cooking, since take-out food often contains too many refined fats and artificial seasonings. However, with modern appliances you will discover that cooking is no longer an annoying chore reserved for special occasions, but an exciting part of everyday life.

So which products should we buy when we actually decide to begin eating healthy food? Here’s what your weekly shopping list should include.

Vegetables. All vegetables should be eaten young, when they are tender and not coarse. Vegetables are best bought from fresh food markets or seasonal, when they are sold in boxes or baskets. Supermarket vegetables are often genetically modified or have been picked green and ripened in boxes when traveling long distances. Sprouts and brightly colored vegetables contain the most vitamins and antioxidants.

Fruits. Again, the trick is to buy seasonal fruit, since exotic fruits have often traveled long distances and ripened in their boxes, not on trees. Local, naturally ripened or, better yet, organic fruit are the best choice for the health-conscious cook.

Herbs. Aromatic herbs and spices can be used fresh or dried. The best idea is to plant the aromatic herbs in pots on your window and use them fresh whenever you need them. To preserve flavor, you can buy spices whole and use them freshly ground.

Cheese. Although cheese is quite rich in fats, cheese is a great source of vitamins and minerals. Buy only fresh cheeses in small quantities and try to eat them at once, since gourmet cheeses don’t have a lengthy shelf life.

Eggs. Buy only organic or free-range eggs, and shake them before buying to ensure freshness.

Fish and shellfish. The best way to buy fish is fresh and unfrozen. Again, most of the fish in supermarkets comes from fish farms where it is fed with artificial substances, and this fish cannot be used in healthy recipes. Pink salmon and other popular kinds of fish will most likely come from a fish farm. Shellfish is a more healthy choice, since shrimp, for example, does not live in chemically polluted water. When you boil mussels, discard those that do not open.

Meat. For truly healthy eating purposes it’s better to skip meat entirely, since it’s almost impossible to find meat that comes from an environmentally and health conscious farmer. Most of the meat in supermarkets has enormous quantities of growth hormones and antibiotics. The best meat for use in healthy recipes comes from small farming communities or organic farms.

Grains. Whole wheat and whole grains should become a staple of your healthy eating routine, because many healthy ingredients are contained in the grain shell. Rice is the only exclusion from the rule, because, even though the rice grain shell is removed, many nutritional elements still remain in the rice grain.

What we eat become a part of us. So make your kitchen a starting point for your new healthy eating habits, and enjoy preparing healthy meals.

Do we really need a home water filter? Can’t we just assume the water that flows from our kitchen and bathroom tap is sufficiently treated for contaminants by our municipal water facility? In order to answer these questions, we need to obtain a little more background information.

Next to air, water is the most important element for our survival.

Water is an integral part of our life and we use it for many household tasks throughout the day, such as: drinking and brushing our teeth, steaming fish and vegetables, washing salad greens, face and hand washing, showering and bathing, feeding the pets and watering our plants.

Most of us take it for granted that our tap water is safe to drink and use for common household tasks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), however, estimates that 45,000,000 people drink tap water that is polluted with chemicals, lead, germs, parasites and other impurities.

A large majority of the major U.S. cities still employ the same basic water treatment technologies that have been used since before World War I. In cities such as Atlanta, Boston and Washington, D.C. consumers are relying on pipes that are, on average, over a century old. Many people don’t realize that our municipal water treatment plants are not designed to remove synthetic chemicals and as a result we find traces of health threatening contaminants in most of our public water supplies.

Situations arise when our tap water is polluted with more than the usual amount of contaminants. Municipal treatment plants have breakdowns that take time to repair. Lead leaches into our drinking water from old pipes and private wells. Smaller water-supply sources can become contaminated from agricultural and other environmental pollutants.

It is difficult to be sure of the exact amount of toxins in our water supply. The EPA has estimated that, in our modern society, we use in excess of 75,000 toxic chemicals and more than 1000 new chemicals are developed each year. The Ralph Nader Research Group after reviewing thousands of pages of EPA documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act concluded that to date more than 2100 toxic chemicals have already been detected in U.S. water supplies.

Our planet earth reuses the same water over and over again, which means there is no “new water”. Every single chemical used in our society, eventually winds up in our water supplies. As the use of synthetic organic chemicals increases, so does the toxicity of our water. The earth’s natural filtration process is not effective at removing these toxic synthetic organic chemicals.

The human body is made up of over 70% water. The proper function of each organ system, as well as every healing process that happens inside our body, takes place with water. Optimal functioning is only possible when water, our body’s transport medium is clean. Wastes form during the body’s metabolism and if these wastes are allowed to accumulate through insufficient water intake, fatigue and even illness results.

If we drink water that contains chlorine or other organic and inorganic chemicals, we force our liver and kidneys to act as a filter for these contaminants. The liver purifies and detoxifies the blood of waste products and toxins. In addition to regulating the body’s water balance and maintaining optimal pH, the kidney also removes metabolic waste products from the bloodstream.

By providing the liver and kidneys with water, a universal solvent and transport medium, they are assisted in their role as a natural body filter. Bombarding these organs with water that contains traces of additional toxins only hinders the body detoxification process and delays waste removal.

Water may not cure every ailment, but it is a primary ingredient that allows our body to dilute and eliminate toxins that have accumulated over time.

What Can We Do To Provide Healthy Water For Our Family?

The simplest, most effective and also the most economical way to treat municipal tap water is a home water filter. Multi-media water filters that combine activated carbon with iron exchange media such as KDF are an excellent choice.

Carbon and KDF work together to remove or reduce traces of contaminants such as chlorine, lead, Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, synthetic chemicals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), MTBE, pesticides (lindane, atrazine), chemicals linked to cancer (benzene, TTHMs, toxaphene) and hundreds of other chemical contaminants that may be present causing bad taste and odors in your drinking water.

The result is healthy, great-tasting water that still contains natural trace minerals that are beneficial to optimal wellbeing and health.

Aloe Vera is a plant that looks like a cactus, but is actually a member of the lily family. It grows in Africa, Asia and the warmer parts of America and Europe. The particular kind of Aloe Vera used for natural remedies has the Latin name Aloe barbadensis and its leaves contain a gel that is rich in therapeutic properties.

Aloe has been used medicinally for over 6,000 years. The ancient Egyptians used it to heal battle wounds and cure infections. The early Greeks used it for relieving blisters, burns and leg ulcers as well as healing bowel and stomach disorders.

Today it is found in health products in the form of gels, juices and creams, and also as an ingredient in some cosmetic products.

How it Works

Aloe Vera contains 75 known ingredients including:

All the vitamins (except Vitamin D).

Enzymes that aid digestion and reduce inflammation.

The minerals needed for the enzymes to function.

Long-chain sugars that help to re-balance the digestive system.

Saponins, which have an anti-microbial effect against bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeast.

Twenty of the 22 amino acids (including seven out of the eight essential amino acids that can’t be produced by the body).

It’s thought that the synergistic effect of these ingredients is what gives Aloe Vera its power.

It is only recently that the scientific establishment has started to carry out proper studies of Aloe Vera but the results so far are encouraging. It appears to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and restorative properties. In one study it was found to have a beneficial effect in lowering the risk factors among patients with heart disease. Another study, started in 2005 at the University of Strathclyde, is investigating the effects of Aloe Vera against super-bugs such as MRSA, after finding that it has the ability to destroy bacteria such as E.coli.

The Benefits of Aloe Vera

Small-scale studies and anecdotal evidence suggests that Aloe Vera may be beneficial in the following cases:

Applied as a cream for:

- Healing small cuts, insect stings, grazes and wounds.

- Healing and repairing skin tissue after burns, including sunburn.

- Healing skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, general itching.

- Cosmetic uses such as moisturising and improving the elasticity of the skin.

Ingested as a gel/juice for:

- Digestive conditions such as IBS, peptic ulcers, acid reflux, Chron’s disease, candida etc.

- Musculo-skeletal conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, etc.

- Immune-related conditions such as asthma, hayfever and even ME.

- Overall protection (as an antioxidant) against free radicals.

How to Take Aloe Vera

You can grow your own Aloe Vera plant indoors and use it as a quick remedy for minor burns and grazes. Just break off a leaf and apply the gel directly.

If you are buying an Aloe Vera product, always purchase those made from 100% pure Aloe Vera. Look out for the International Aloe Science Council Seal of Approval as a guide.

Natural fruit flavourings may be added to Aloe Vera drinks to make them more palatable, but avoid those that contain artificial flavours and colourings. Clear juices should be avoided as it means the pulp (containing much of the benefit) has been strained. Also avoid those products that use the whole plant, as the outer leaf contains a latex that has a strong laxative effect. If you experience side-effects, such as diarrhoea, you should reduce your dose and consider switching products.

The words ‘gel’ and ‘juice’ are often used interchangeably, so some drinks can be described as gels. If taking Aloe Vera internally you would normally take between 2 fl oz (60ml) and 6 fl oz (180ml) per day depending on the acuteness of your condition. If you start out on a high dose you would expect to reduce to the lower doses by about six weeks.

To experience the full benefits of an Aloe Vera product it is often recommended that it is used regularly for a minimum period of three months.

[Please note that this does not constitute medical advice. If you suffer from a medical condition you should always seek the advice of a doctor or your chosen practitioner.]

The dangers of processed foods and diets

Why is that the business of food processing is not strictly regulated by law so as to prevent health problems generated by an inadequate diet? Unhealthy products encourage an unhealthy diet. They appeal to the consumer by their availability and invasive advertising. If food producers are controlled by health officials, then regulations must be too lax in as far as marketed foods are concerned.

It is well-known that hydrogenated oils and partially hydrogenated oils, for instance, are extremely unhealthy. Vast volumes of research papers, studies and informative material have been published. Yet a proportion of the population still falls into the trap of believing that margarine is a “healthier alternative to butter, full of vitamins”. In fact, the trans-fatty acids it contains surpass the “healthy benefits” it offers. In this particular case, all foods containing hydrogentated oils should have a health hazard warning. Indeed, the law should prevent production of these foods. The health warning should resemble those on the cigarette packs, stating “This product contains trans-fatty acids that increase the risk of heart disease”. In this way, people would be constantly reminded of the negative effects of such products on health.

Generally, when it comes to foods and dieting, people should be advised of the potential inconvenience that might occur due to some ingredients or the way food is prepared.

Take for instance the case of so many diets that are undocumented, not officially controlled or approved. They promise great things but are less explicit about the great problems they generate. The very popular Atkins, for instance, a real danger to health, is a case in point.

Why are these anti-health practices not forbidden? The answer is glaringly obvious. Commercial and industrial interests have overtaken interest in people’s health.

Recent notable lawsuits

Well-informed consumers play a decisive role in their own health. And if people are not fully convinced by so many scientific studies, by so much information available, then they surely will when they find out about the multitude of lawsuits against food producers or promoters of diets. These include Kraft Foods Inc., producers of Oreo cookies, the McDonald fast food chain and the Atkins diet.

Attorney Stephen Joseph sued Kraft Foods Inc in 2003. Joseph based his accusations on a provision of the civil code of California which states that manufacturers are liable for products if the consumer is not advised of the products’ lack of safety. He rightfully claimed that the public was not aware of the high content of trans-fats in Oreos. He declared that he sued out of concern for public health. No money was requested in the lawsuit, which he finally withdrew, explaining that the publicity on this case had made people aware of the health risks of the product. If the lawsuit was intended as bad publicity for Oreos, the goal was not attained. Kraft Foods Inc will continue to produce Oreos in a trans-fat free version.

Another famous case of litigation is the 2002 suit against McDonald’s. The lawsuit was filed by the lawyer Samuel Hirsch on behalf of some obese children. The lawyer sustained that the fast food producer misled consumers into believing that the products were healthy and safe. He claimed that eating McDonald’s products made children develop health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The court dismissed the suit on the grounds that no one is forced to eat at McDonald’s and that the law cannot moderate individuals’ excesses.

In a recent “diet trial” in Florida, 53-year-old Jody Gorran filed a suit against Atkins Nutritionals on May 26, 2004. The plaintiff claimed that after going on Atkins diet his cholesterol level increased so much that he needed angioplasty in order to unblock an artery. In addition to financial damages, he also requests that the company warns the public of the potential dangers of a diet favoring meat, cheese and other high-fat proteins by labeling their products. The outcome is not known at the time of writing.

Even if some of these lawsuits were begun for financial gain rather than humanitarian causes, they have a positive result. The publicity around such cases makes people ask questions, gives them the idea of doubt, the “assumption of guilt”.

How did we cure ourselves of many aches pains and illnesses in the past?

Most of the remedies worked very well, were cheap and could usually be found in most homes.

Did you know that? Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately, without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional “pain relievers.”

Did you know that? Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They’ll clear up your stuffed nose.

Aching muscles from a dose of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly, even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes. Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Cardio E-Z

Cardio E-Z is an oral chelation product developed for the cardiovascular system function. In 1997 Dr. Donsbach developed Cardio E-Z after comprehensive testing at Santa Monica Hospital on hundreds of patients. It contains EDTA, CoQ-10, and a combination of nutrients that make it, according to Dr. Donsbach, the best product for cardiovascular system function. Some of the important nutrients and their benefits to the human body present in Cardio E-Z are discussed below.

Vitamin C

Cardio E-Z contains 400 mg of Vitamin C per serving. Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble substance that is responsible for several important functions in the body. It is an important antioxidant that blocks some of the damage caused by free radicals that are a byproduct of converting food to energy. It is also important in the healing of wounds and production of skin, tendons, blood vessels, etc.

The build up of hazardous byproducts in the body causes aging and produces various health problems such as heart disease and cancer. Cardio E-Z contains the necessary amounts of Vitamin C that help to reduce the chances of heart disease.

Vitamin E

Cardio E-Z contains 300 IU of vitamin E per serving. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble substance that is commonly found in eight forms. Each form performs different activities that are vital to the body. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects your body from free radicals. Free radicals are the main culprits of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin E in Cardio E-Z reduces the chance of cardiovascular disease and plays a role in immune function.

Niacin

Cardio E-Z contains 50 mg niacin per serving. Niacin is also known as Vitamin B3. Small amounts are also manufactured in the body. It helps in the release of energy and metabolism, cell respiration, functioning of the nervous system and normal secretion of stomach fluids. A deficiency of niacin causes dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia. Required amounts of niacin for healthy bodily functions are present in Cardio E-Z.

Vitamin B6

Cardio E-Z contains 50 mg of Vitamin B6 per serving. B6 serves an important function in the metabolism of protein. Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble substance that is commonly found in three forms. Cardio E-Z contains the necessary amounts of vitamin B6 for proper functioning of nervous and immune systems.

Calcium

Cardio E-Z contains 100 mg of calcium per serving. Calcium plays an important part in the human body by keeping the bones strong and supporting the proper function of muscles and nerves. Cardio E-Z helps to maintain proper functioning of the human body by providing additional amounts of calcium.

Magnesium

Cardio E-Z contains 200 mg of magnesium per serving. Magnesium is required for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Cardio E-Z uses this element to keep heart rhythm steady along with other vital functions.

CoQ10

Cardio E-Z contains 15 mg of CoQ10 per serving. CoQ10 is also known as ubiquinone or Coenzyme Q10. It is found naturally in the body in small amounts. It is an anti-oxidant that is used for release in cells. Coenzyme Q10 helps with congestive heart failure when taken orally. This is one of the more important nutrients in Cardio E-Z.

Networking is a productive activity. But to benefit the productivity to its full extent you should network the way you would organize other activities.

There is a difference between networking and selling. Networking might be familiar to selling, but it is different in the fact that sales is dedicated to a specific service (that you offer in this case). When you network you do not sell something, but you rather match.
Networking is about exchanging information and knowledge. You could exchange information about (other) people, about you, or even about information and knowledge about specific topics.

The goal of networking is to find a match. And this always includes two sides: You and the group, or you and the other.

Think for this last example about dating someone, and you communicate about mutual interests. The better the match, the more of a chance that both agree in a next step.

So if networking is about matching, you should focus on moving in networks where your input is feasible to match.

If you enter a business network that is focused on information and contribution of specific knowledge and you are in for just knowing people and socializing, the match chances are poor.

If you enter a group or business network that is focused on referrals and your input is knowledge the chances are also minor.

Networking is possible at any time, but most networking events are not really productive. They are if you are focused.

You know how some food labels indicate that the contents of a
package are ‘fat-free’? So you stock up on lots of such ‘good’
foods, faithfully avoiding as much fat as you can.

But somehow, you continue to pile on the weight. How can that
be? I’m assuming you’re exercising regularly here. If you aren’t
then that’s a different story altogether.

Well, not all ‘fat-free’ foods are truly fat-free.
The trouble here is that in order to make these ‘fat-free’
products more palatable for you, the manufacturers add lots of
sugar or sweeteners of questionable safety to them.

Next time you go shopping, check this out for yourself: pick up
any ‘fat-free’ (non-dairy) food product off the shelf and see
if it contains any of the following items: ‘glucose’, ’syrup’,
‘dextrose’, and other ingredients that end in ‘-ose’.

These are all sugars. Those that don’t contain sugars may contain
sweeteners like aspartame which have dodgy properties (won’t go
into that now).

What’s so bad about sugars, you ask? Well nothing, if you take
them in moderation. But if you regularly consume ‘fat-free’
products which contain sugars, you’re setting yourself up for
disaster.

This is because of how your body deals with sugars. It metabolizes
some of the sugars you eat, but then stores any excess in form of
fat!

And you thought you were eating fat-free foods!

Worse still, the fat-that-used-to-be-sugar is harder to reach
(read - burn up) when you’re trying to lose weight through exercise
than the fat-that-has-always-been-fat.

Also, if you are so bent on avoiding fat, remember that you
actually need fat to function properly. Your hormones and many
other important chemicals in your body are made from a form of
fat. You may be depriving your body of vital substances without
knowing.

Now bear in mind that there are different types of fat, some good,
some not so good (again, beyond the scope of this article. Very quickly though: the worst types of fats you could ingest are ‘trans-fats’ - on your food labels these are called ‘hydrogenated’ or ‘partially hydrogenated’ vegetable oils. Saturated fats are not ideal, but these ‘trans-fats’ are positively dangerous. Unsaturated fats are the healthiest especially omega 3 oils).

So in all things it pays to wise up and be aware of what
you’re eating.

What does this all mean to you?

Unless you have a medical reason not to, eat your regular
foods, but do so in moderation. For any healthy food plan to
work, it helps if you actually enjoy the food you’re eating.

Always check out the labels of the foods you buy. Make sure that
they don’t contain any ‘hidden fats’ while claiming to be ‘fat-free’.

Remember to eat only when you’re hungry, and to stop eating
when you feel full (not stuffed).

And get moving: start an exercise program and work out regularly.
Aim to turn your body into a fat-burning machine. The benefits
are multiple, and it helps you maintain a healthy weight (and shape;))
while eating your favourite foods.
